Learn How To Properly Cut Bamboo

How to cut bamboo the right way

When trimming bamboo, using proper technique creates clean, healthy cuts while keeping the plant looking its best.

Follow these steps for the best way to cut bamboo, use sharp bypass pruners for safe, effective bamboo cutting.

1. Take Safety Precautions

  • Wear protective gloves, long sleeves and eyewear
  • Inspect the stems for dead branches which are brittle
  • Secure your footing when cutting taller sections

2. Cut the Stems

  • Identify bamboo’s segmented sections called nodes
  • Cut through the hollow internode stems between nodes
  • Avoid damaging nodes where new growth emerges

3. Cut Diagonally Above a Node

  • Angle pruner blades at 45 degrees pointing up
  • Make each cut right above an intact node
  • Diagonal cuts shed water, which help prevent rotting

Make sure to disinfect your cutting tools between cutting bamboo plants as added protection. Properly hand pruning with clean diagonal internode cuts minimizes stress and neatens up bamboo stands wonderfully.

It’s the ideal approach for home gardeners managing ornamental clumping bamboo or harvesting edible shoots.

What’s the best tool to cut bamboo?

As always, when cutting bamboo, put your health and safety first so make sure you have the correct gloves and eye protection to protect against flying pieces of bamboo.

From trial and error we have seen that determining what tool you will need to cut bamboo, depends on the thickness (in diameter) of the bamboo culm.

From research we have also seen that using a pull saw is your best option for more accuracy. If you need to cut a bamboo stump, then your best option is using a sawzall.

Can you cut a piece of bamboo and replant

Yes you can; It’s possible to propagate new bamboo plants through a process called culm or pole cuttings. This involves using healthy stalks cut from bamboo groves.

This involves selecting mature culms then making a clean cut above a node during early spring, allowing the poles to callus for 1-2 weeks.

Prepare the soil with amendments (to change soil properties for better growth), planting the stalks at least 12 inches deep for stability, watering at planting then following standard bamboo moisture guidelines for your climate.

With patience and proper technique, bamboo will generate new shoots genetically identical to the original specimens from the repurposed poles planted in suitable areas.
